Homestead

The City of Homestead is the second oldest city in Miami-Dade county. The South Dade area opened to homesteaders in 1898. At the time the only way in and out of the area was through a path called the "Homesteaders Trail". In 1904 Henry Flagler decided to extend the railroad to Key West from Miami. Farmers of the local area were now able to transport their fruits and vegetables to Miami and other parts of the state. Many of the workers who helped build the railroad stayed in the area and became the founding founders of our city. In 1912 the Overseas Railroad was completed and in 1913 the City of Homestead was incorporated.

Homestead lies near the southern-most tip of Florida, where sunny days are in the majority and the average temperature is 75 degrees. Ten miles west are the vast mangrove forests and watery saw grass plains of Everglades National Park, a subtropical wilderness that shelters alligator and ibis, eagle and manatee. To the east and south are Biscayne Bay and its underwater national park, the Florida Keys and the Atlantic Ocean. Thirty miles north is Miami, "Gateway to the Americas," and one of the country's exciting international cities.

The hometown atmosphere that welcomes prospective residents comes from a community that is proud of the continuing accomplishments that are making the Homestead area an increasingly desirable place to live work and raise a family. The City of Homestead maintains a unique "small-town" atmosphere with all the urban amenities.
