| The residential community
of Hillcrest
Heights is
aptly named, occupying a place on the slopes of Windy Hill, overlooking Crooked Lake. Between the broad blue waters of
the lake, and the top of the hill, the 200-foot elevation change places the
area among the most scenic places along central Florida's Lake Wales Ridge.
Situated seven miles south
of Lake Wales, Hillcrest Heights was incorporated as a town in 1923,
during the height of Florida's land boom. Today it is a desirable
address for those willing to commute to area employers. The town is surrounded
by citrus, which also serves as a major local industry. The high, well-drained
soil and the warming influence of the lake also provide an ideal micro-climate
for citrus.
One of Polk County's smallest
towns, Hillcrest
Heights
occupies an area of only 100 acres, and includes a population of only 235. It
is governed by a Town Council consisting of a mayor and four commissioners.
